ASHTABULA COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER’S Sleep Disorders Center has been awarded a five-year accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The accreditation covers all areas of sleep testing, including in-center testing and home sleep apnea testing. Susan Billec, RRT, RPSGT, RST, CSE, the clinical director of the Sleep Disorders Center, said sleep disorders have become a major health concern for Americans. “Sleep disorders affect our health, work productivity, personal safety and quality of life,” she said. “A sleep test is a painless way to determine if there is a physical health problem that is keeping you from getting a good night’s rest.” Sleep disorders contribute to other health problems. The likelihood of heart attack, stroke, coronary artery disease and angina is two times higher for people who consistently sleep less than five hours each night. The AASM accreditation for ACMC is based on a history of high-quality care for patients who potentially suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia, circadian rhythm sleep-wake disorders, restless leg syndrome or other sleep- related movement disorders. “The American Academy of Sleep Medicine accreditation is the gold standard for patient care in sleep medicine,” said ACMC Healthcare System President & CEO Michael Habowski. “Our Sleep Disorders Center has always followed the standards set by the AASM. This accreditation formalizes our commitment to the latest advances in sleep medicine, and it guarantees quality care for our patients. The AASM accreditation also reassures referring physicians that ACMC’s Sleep Disorders Center is dedicated to the highest standards.” Yisa Sunmonu, MD, and Jonathan Oliver, MD, board- certified sleep medicine specialists who have a heart for getting to the cause of a patient’s sleeping problems, lead ACMC’s Sleep Disorders Center. The requirements to become accredited by the AASM cover the types of diagnostic tests offered, staff training, technology, quality assurance and education of the public about sleep disorders. ACMC is one of 2,500 sleep centers accredited by the AASM. Sleep tests at ACMC’s Sleep Disorders Center can take place at night or during the day for shift workers. Accredited diagnostic tests include: ➜ ➜ In-center polysomnography, which records brain waves, oxygen level, breathing and more. ➜ ➜ Home obstructive sleep apnea testing, which measures breathing and oxygen levels. ➜ ➜ Maintenance of wakefulness testing, which measures how alert a person is during the day. ➜ ➜ Multiple sleep latency testing, which measures how fast a person falls asleep. ➜ ➜ CPAP titration test, which measures the pressure needed to keep airways open. The ACMC Sleep Disorders Center is located across the street from the hospital. Patients sleep in bedrooms that mimic a home environment. Showers are available, and a voucher is given for breakfast in the ACMC Café in case the patient cannot go home before starting work. Sleep studies are a covered benefit under most insurance carriers.* Call 440-997-6744 or visit acmchealth.org/ sleep-disorders-center. *Studies require a physician order. Start sleeping better today!
