I got into this later in life. I’ve always had family members that had one medical ailment or another and was always fascinated with healthcare and how the body works and different things that affect it. I’m really glad I made the decision to do this.” —Janet Tarbill, RN “I became a nurse after watching my mom as a child, seeing the gratitude she got out of it. I found I had the same passion to help other people.” —Katie Magda, RN “My mom was my biggest influence. I always noticed growing up, she enjoyed her job and helping others. I always wanted to do the same thing and help others.” —Matt Barber, RN “It seems almost all of America, if not the world, has discovered a newfound respect for nurses and healthcare workers,” DiFiore said. “If you’re anything like me, you find these accolades both rewarding and at the same time humbling. Rewarding because it’s nice to be appreciated, but humbling because being a nurse is ‘just part of who I am.’” ‘Why I became a nurse’ During Nurses Week in early May, we asked several ACMC nurses to reflect on why they became a nurse. “I think most of us have a story to tell,” DiFiore said. “For some, it’s a story about a loved one who endured a medical experience or a health condition. For others still, it may be a story—not so much about “I did not think of becoming a nurse until I was having my first baby. The delivery was difficult and ended up becoming an emergency. The kindness, compassion, and support of the nurses to get me through what was happening made me want to do the same that very day. A few years later I did start with nursing school and I never looked back. It is really the greatest calling anyone can have.” —Jacquelyn DiFiore, DNP, MHA, RN, NEA-BC an experience but rather our deep desire to help others, to make a difference when it matters the most.”
