Ashtabula County Medical Center | ACMC Pulse | Summer 2019

Welcome IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE we are celebrating the 115th anniversary of our doors opening at Ashtabula County Medical Center. Back then, we were known as Ashtabula General Hospital and our existence can be traced to community leaders who wanted a new hospital where local doctors and nurses were committed to providing the best healthcare they could. The staff of Ashtabula General Hospital answered that call through bad times and good. Today, the caregivers at ACMC do the same. A headline in an Ashtabula Star-Beacon from 1952 heralds the hospital as “A Monument to Civic Unity.” The article also calls us a monument to community achievement: “Ashtabula General Hospital is a symbol of what a community—this community or any other community—can do if it gets solidly behind a single project and, with unity and selflessness, drives on to ultimate victory.” Unity and selflessness What a great summary of what this hospital means to Ashtabula County and northeast Ohio. I’m struck by two words that have taken on even more relevance today— unity and selflessness . Each day we are challenged to look beyond our own needs. Many of you put the needs of others first as you care for children or other family members. Likewise, we strive to put our healthcare focus where ACMC’s history a testament to community achievement When we put the focus on others, we can achieve so much more. That’s why we remind ourselves that healthcare today is really a partnership between patient and caregiver. Michael Habowski, President and CEO ACMC Healthcare System it matters. However, when we put the focus on others, we can achieve so much more. That’s why we remind ourselves that healthcare today is really a partnership between patient and caregiver. When you choose ACMC, you’re not only getting our historic commitment to your well-being, you’re also getting advanced technology, access to expert providers and, more importantly, a healthcare system built on the premise of keeping you close to home for your healthcare. We take that commitment seriously. We not only bring Cleveland Clinic physicians to Ashtabula, but we also ensure that our specialists are visiting other Ashtabula County communities by scheduling patients at our Family Health Centers in Conneaut, Geneva and Jefferson. Here because of you This issue of Pulse is filled with history, but it also highlights the difference ACMC makes in our community today. We value every patient, and we thank you for your support over the years. We remember exactly why Ashtabula General Hospital was started 115 years ago, and we are mindful of those who helped us continue it through the years. As this passage from that 1952 Star Beacon article states, we are here because of you: “The community—the people it will serve—really built General Hospital. They realized the need. They provided the dollars. They will reap the benefits. … It is our hospital. We built it. We can take pride in it.” 2 ACMC Pulse • Anniversary Issue • acmchealth.org
