Ashtabula County Medical Center | ACMC Pulse | Winter 2018

12 ACMC Pulse  • acmchealth.org IT IS NOT UNCOMMON for a hospital to offer residency programs. However, ACMC’s Pharmacy Practice Residency Program goes beyond merely educating, and also urges Residents to give back to the communities they serve. “We are a unique program. First, we provide several unique opportunities for education that most small hospitals aren’t able to offer,” says Residency Program Director Amanda Kobylinski, PharmD, BCGP. “We require a rotation through Glenbeigh for awareness about drug and alcohol rehabilitation. We also require time in oncology, so the pharmacy residents also spend time with patients fighting cancer. Our goal is to help the residents stay focused on the health needs of their community ACMC pharmacy residency program has community focus while becoming an integral part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.” About the program ACMC began the residency program this year, and it is the only pharmacy resident program in Ashtabula County. Residents work with pharmacy staff and enhance pharmacy services as they work with specific departments. Residents are required to spend time with Acute Care, Community Pharmacy, Critical Care, Drug & Alcohol Rehabilitation, Infectious Diseases, Internal Medicine, Oncology, and Skilled Nursing/ Orthopedics. They can also elect to work with Administration, Cardiology, Emergency Medicine, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, or Palliative Care/Hospice. Other duties include teaching medical and nursing in-service classes and working with local pharmacy students as co-preceptors. “The addition of the pharmacy residency program at ACMC creates an opportunity to expand clinical services, enhance patient outcomes, and help prevent patients from being readmitted to the hospital. At the same time, we are developing the clinical skills of the pharmacy residents, preparing them to be clinical specialists in their future areas of practice,” says the Director of Pharmacy Anna-Marie Oakes, PharmD, MBA. ACMC Pharmacy ACMC’s Department of Pharmacy provides 24-hour inpatient and home-going prescription services.
